Nintendo wii

When the Nintendo Wii came out, it brought with it a whole new world of gaming, but with a retro twist.  I was very excited at the prospect of being able to play games similar to those I grew up with, and everyone got very nostalgic when told that not only would we be able to re-experience the wonders of Nintendo gaming, but that we could actually play the very same games we always did, not only from Nintendo, but also from Gameboy, and Sega. A huge selling point in my opinion! They could have easily just expected everyone to buy new games as the console is affordable for everyone, but appealing to our past gaming pleasure was the best game plan they’ve had.

Nintendo really made the change with its wireless, motion control remote.  I was very confused when I first saw the remote only featuring 3 small buttons, but like everyone else, I was psyched to try it out when I heard that I would basically be the remote.  This brought a very fresh approach to gaming, which Sony and Microsoft have recently added to their consoles as an extra.

The Wii is not really in the same league as the PS3 and XBOX though, and it shouldn’t be compared, as it’s aimed at a very different market.  I think that’s what makes the Wii so fun and likeable, is that it won’t be predominantly the husbands, sons and brothers hogging the telly with their gaming, everyone can join in.  Many of the kids I know start as young as 3 years old and there is no age limit or gender preference. Sony PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 descended on us with its raw power, superb graphics and Blu-ray player.  Annihilating its’ former sibling (ps2) with its impressively fresh design and capabilities. The latest consoles coming in the form of the PlayStation 3 slim.

There has been a lot of speculation that the new PS3 Slim is both better and worse than the original.  Probably the most significant change for the better is its new slimmer, sleeker, matt design.  It has a very contemporary look with the matt finish, but does still smudge, so watch those greasy fingers.  It doesn’t need to be handled too much though, thanks to the new touch sensitive buttons that have replaced the old-school soft touch buttons. XBOX 360

Everybody knows what an XBOX 360 is, from toddlers to grannies or whether you’re a fan or foe, the 360 has become a household name.  I bet even those who are standing their ground in the unceasing war between XBOX and PlayStation would reluctantly admit that the XBOX 360 is a superb games console.  Especially since Microsoft upped its game with the XBOX 360 slim.
Since the original basic 360’s release in 2005 Microsoft haven’t needed to make many changes to the consoles over the last few years.  If you follow them from basic to premium and elite packages you’ll see the only real changes are with the hard drive and the odd port.  This just shows that they pretty much mastered it from the start.
The XBOX 360 slim is not only more compact and much more aesthetically pleasing, but has all loose ends tied up.  With integrated wireless capabilities, there is much less fuss connecting to XBL.  And contributing to our new green planet it also has remarkably less power consumption, which is not only kinder to our environment but also beneficial to the console and gamer, because it assists in the overall cooling of the machine, therefore decreasing the chances of the red ring of death.   A significant improvement, considering the RROD reportedly cost Microsoft over a Billion dollars in warranty fees. The Games Console

Many people think that the games console is a relatively new concept when in fact it can be dated back to the 1970’s when the first home video games console that you could hook up to your TV was invented.
One of the most famous games ever played on the original games consoles was an arcade game produced by Atari called ‘Pong’. Then in the 80’s Atari introduce the game ‘Space Invaders’ which is still a game that can be found today. [Read more...]
