When the original PSP was released, every gamer out there found an excuse to buy one, although it was a little pricey it made the perfect gift and portable gaming system for anyone who was serious about gaming and wanted to take that experience everywhere they went.
And while the PSP slowly made its way into the back of our minds while we focused on all the new and exciting gaming that came after that, Sony have been silently working on the PSP2. We expected it sooner or later, but with all the new technology between then and now, none of us know what to expect.
Really all we currently know is that it does exist and that it’s not just a rumour. And that it will be announced by the end of the month, for release later in 2011.
Sony is always striving for power and the PSP2 could potentially be as powerful as the XBOX 360 and PS3. Some Smartphones and devices like the iPod touch are already capable of astounding graphics, as was the first PSP, so if the PSP2 could top that, it truly will be an impressive portable gaming system.
In following suit with the touch-sensitive technology, the PSP2 will apparently have a touch sensitive pad on the back of the handheld so that the capabilities are there but don’t interfere with gaming on the front of the device. So no finger’s and smudges getting in the way of the onscreen action.
A bigger screen is inevitable, especially now that a lot of Smartphones have already increased to at least 4” screens, the PSP2 could go slightly bigger. Because let’s face it, in the gaming world, screen and size really do matter to get the full experience.
Two different sources hinted that the PSP2 will not have a 3D screen. Apparently naked-eye 3D screens are not perfected and still have limitations, so they want to focus on high precision. But it will have HD display and also new twin thumb-sticks for easier control. If games are going to be as good as the PS3, then dual sticks are a must for satisfactory gaming.
Although nobody knows exactly what it’s going to look like yet or whether it will have 3G or be satisfied with WiFi, I think it’s definitely going to blow our minds and bring a new spin to the portable gaming world. And with pricing rumoured to be in the low 200’s, since Nintendo hinted that the 3DS would not be pricey, and from previous criticism on prices for older PSP’s, if they keep the price reasonable, I think it’s going to be a huge winner for Sony.
