Sony PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 descended on us with its raw power, superb graphics and Blu-ray player.  Annihilating its’ former sibling (ps2) with its impressively fresh design and capabilities. The latest consoles coming in the form of the PlayStation 3 slim.

There has been a lot of speculation that the new PS3 Slim is both better and worse than the original.  Probably the most significant change for the better is its new slimmer, sleeker, matt design.  It has a very contemporary look with the matt finish, but does still smudge, so watch those greasy fingers.  It doesn’t need to be handled too much though, thanks to the new touch sensitive buttons that have replaced the old-school soft touch buttons.

And while it has the much appreciated Blu-ray player, together with all the important bits; like built in WiFi, HDMI port, all games in HD, and a free online gaming service.  Sony has limited us by taking away the ability to load different operating systems.  And although the new slim is even quieter, it heats up quickly and the fan noise does kick up accordingly, but is more energy-efficient, which does keep it cools enough, and has other benefits across the board.

I think this phenomenally fast and power packed console has perked up the brand.   And it is also gentler on our pockets, but still nowhere near the competitions prices which could be the decision maker for a lot of people.  Another huge blow is not being able to play PS2 games on it, so not only is the console much more expensive, you’ll also have to fork out for all new games.  I think if PS2 games were still on the table it would have sweetened the deal, because games are expensive, and not everyone can afford to buy an expensive console and replace all their games.  Of course that only applies to people upgrading from a PS2 console or an entirely different console all together.  For those with the bulkier PS3, it comes down to style and perfecting what they already have.

However I do think with its outstanding graphics and sexy compact design, longstanding PlayStation lovers wouldn’t hesitate to upgrade.
